too much fuel ruin seals?

I went to look at a FD3S tonight and after talking the the seller and inspecting the car it was pretty obvious that there has been alot of fuel dumped into the engine. it has been running fat like that for quite some time it seems and i was curious will it wear out the engine seals like a piston engine would? he said he had the engine rebuilt about 10k miles ago though he had it running that way since. would that have ruined it and will it need new rebuild? thanks.

The only really bad thing it can cause is carbon build up on the rotors, but this can be fixed with fuel additives.

It should be ok.

On extreme situations it can...

Excessive fuel burning "out the exhaust" is almost like detonation.

I agree with Ted. Too much fuel can wash away the oil lubricating the seals. This can cause accelerated wear. However, that would be an extreme case.

If you aren't that familiar with rotaries, they tend to run richer than piston engines in general. Check the local forums for some knowledgeable FD owners in your area; they can go take a look at the car with you and let you know if it's a problem child or not.

Hell no. Never hand your keys over to Mazda.
