Starter Problem 91 Vert

Hey i just got my fresh rebuild in my rx7, and i went to hookup the starter.. and it had a busted nut on it, so i went to o'reillys and bought a new starter
well i got it all hooked up, and i went to start the car and the damn wires got hot, i was like WTF? and i couldnt figure out what was goin on, smoke smoke started rising from the negative battery terminal?

Is it a short...?
the starter clicked ... but didnt turn the flywheel.. then the wires got hot
I Benched tested it before i put it in my car.. so i know its good.
any good suggestions .. would help graciously
thanks

Check your ground. After I did a transmission swap in my 90GXL I couldnt get the starter to work either. Ended up running a separate ground cable to another part of the car.
