se cold start problem

when starting the car after sitting for a while, the cold start will take kick the tach to almost 5k stay there for 1-3 minutes instead of the 30sec or so it should then drop down around 2k and start jumping, 2k-4k. it will continue to cycle like this for up to 15 minutes. i've found the only wy to get it to stop is fight it to hold a steady rpm with my foot. once i do that it will drop to its normal idle.

tried this in the first gen section but it keeps sinking without any responses.

so it's a first gen, meaning it's carburated correct? if so i had a simular problem with my old 83 olds, with the biggest piece of crap carberater ever created (quadrajet) it'd do that for me alot untill i cleaned it out and put a carb kit in it... that might help ya...
good luck!
