s5 gearbox problem. PLEASE HELP

ok guys..

i have a s5 rx7 gearbox in my s4 and it is hard to select gears specaily 1st and 2nd..

it somestimes feels when i select 1st i have to be rough with it.. and if i am to rough the leaver goes past 1st when selecting first..

can someone shead some light on what could be at fault please

How worn are the shifter bushings? Also the top retaining plate that has the hard rubber boot that slides over the shifter? These are most likely your problem.

You can just look at that boot. It may not seem like much, but that really has a huge effect on the shifter. As far as the bushings, Id probably just try replacing them.. as if they are original theyre probably shot anyway.

Here is a pic of the boot Im talking about:


The bushings are underneath that, and are basically just 2 plastic pieces sandwhiching a spring washer. You should be able to find everything you need here:
http://www.mazdatrix.com/g4.htm , obviously you may be able to source them more local but at least you know what you're looking for. This is what it sounds like the problem is to me based in your description, but it may be a more serious internal problem like smashed/worn synchonizers. .. but when you said the lever feels like it goes past 1st thats a sure sign for bad boot/bushings.

yes! that bush it poked! i really didn't think it would be a cuase of a problem like that.. but anything can go!
