Revving Rotary Engine

Ok i have heard many different things about the rotary engine and i think that it way more logical than a piston engine and way more powerful for its size. im 16 and i own an 84 gslse - have had for about a month. Lots of mechanics and tire shop workers and old guys and such have told me that you can rev the rotary engine as high as you want for as long as you want and drive it hard and it wont do a thing to it. Others have told me not to rev it high because im really damaging it. What is the truth. thanks

Power curve starts to drop in the mid 6k rpm range, depending on mods. Reving over 8k leads to accelerated wear and stationary gear damage on a stock engine. Keep it under 7k max rpm if you want it to last.

ya theres really no reason to rev it past 7k rpms anyway. and non turbo rotarys do tend to last quite awhile under alot of beating compared to turbo rotarys.. just dont be stupid about how your treat it and keep it maintained

for high revs you also need to upgrade/modify the eccentric shaft

Just stick with 7500k it's plenty of powerband imo

well then a question to bump that.. would u say ALL n/t rotarys (my 13b n/t 5spd) would start to loose its power band at 6k?

I mean most of us guys racing or auto X'ing I am sure would love to knwo the curve on our engines so we use the desired gear, rpm to make the most power.

my car is bone stock except for the rb downpipe and presilencer

No, it depends on which year non-turbo rotary you have and mods completed. A stock 86-88 non-turbo will make power to about 6.5k- 7k with the mods you have. If its a 89-91 they can make power to 7k-7.5k with your mods. If its street ported, has a exhaust and intake work, they can make power into the 8-8.5k range.

Yes and no. Yes if you kept the air tube that puts pressure into the 5th and 6th ports, then you would have gained about 10-18hp. If not, then you may have about the same or less hp. If you want to be lazy, and loose bottem end power, just wire the 5th and 6th ports open and see what your missing.

And anything above 7.5k stock will start to cause apex seal chatter

regardless of the power band, I had always heard that routinely taking the RX7 up to near red line would help remove any carbon deposits, and was recommended. Isn't that true?

Not sure where you heard that one. 8500, yes. 7500, no. My FD has seen 8000 rpms about a gazillion times in the last 8 years

That is correct. I've been told of a completely stock auto tranny FD that had to have the motor torn down b/c the elderly owner never came close to redlining the car.
