rebuilding a 1st generation

Hi, Recently I bought two Mazda RX7 1st generation. The 1981 12A runs well but the body needs some repair. The 1985 12a got a very good body and mechanic but the mnotor stop running 3 4 months ago when he run up to 165 000km (yes km, I'm from Canada). My project is to install the 12A(202000km) from the 1981 in the 1985. This is my first project with a RX7, since I searxch for on for 5 years., so I need your opinion, experience and tips on this project.

Thanks for helping, your will help making a dream come true for me.

PS: I attahc a picture of the 12A 1981, I will try to send a picture of the 1985 soon

shouldnt be that tough if you got a manual, just keep most of the stuff from the 85 and swap it onto the 81 block.

clean up the block

The 12A block from my 1981 leak a little bit and need some clean up. Any product you suggest to clean the block. I will not rebuilt yet, since this one is working fine and I will check to have plenty of oil all the time. So I will take my time to rebuild the 12A block from the 1985.
Oh yeah, the old owner of the 1985 give me two chamber with modified port, he tolds me he changes it for peripheral port. Can somebody can explain to me if those new port are a good project when rebuilding the 1985-12a with it.

thanks

Peripheral ports??? Eh, don't try that on a street car! It'll mean a lot of custom work (manifolds, sidehousings...) and give you awesome power. BUT: nothing below, well 4000RPM,5000RPM, who knows???
Idle is VERY rough on a PP configuration, too.
Maybe someone can give you a link to some pages on porting. Then you'd understand the porting configurations better, it's kinda hard to explain in words.
As for the cleaning, I always use a degreaser that's made for motorcycle cleaning. Works great. Several makes overhere, I believe Castrol has one too.

You can get video's on rebuilding the 13B on ebay regulary, they come very close, so it might help. Don't know, though, US-video's won't play overhere I think, so I never bought one.

some photos

Hi guys,

Here a the picture I takes for my project.
http://homepage.mac.com/ve2cvx/PhotoAlbum1.html
So the yellow one is a 1981 and the gray one is 1985.
Both are GS model. Both cars are store in garage of my father-in-law poultry farm. And I have access to a heated garage 45 feet away from this garage door. My first step will be to get out the engine of the 1985, and I will do a little bit of body works too.

Oh yeah, is anybody knows if the tie rod of the 1981 are compatible with the 1985, because those from the 1985 are bad.

thanks
