Oil cooler Thermostat

I tested mine in trying to trouble shoot my low oil pressure.

I put it in water and heated it to 150F. The little thing came out the correct amount. However, the little nipple never went back into the thermostat. Has anybody ever tested theirs and noticed if it goes back in?

Also, I noticed i have higher oil pressure at 3000 RPM with the thremostat out. 60PSI with it out and 49 with it in. What gives?

I also noticed some scaring on the side of the thermostat. What could have caused this? Look at pic

Mazda wants $67 for a new one.
