Angry noob question: hold down accelerator, revs drop after few secs

I'm a car noob, but! BUT! Not for too much longer. Bought my RX-7 a week ago and i don't think i'll get over it too soon.

I don't have too much info to give, but when I start up the car in my carport (2 open sides) with exhaust facing out one of the open sides, and leave it running for 5 mins to warm up, thats all good... Then I give it a few revs, say take it up to 3000 - holding my foot on the accelerator not moving at all, suddenly the revs drop and it makes some caughing sounds, so I let it out again...

Could this be because it's not getting enough oxygen? or something else?

Edit: I also remember after doing this, I can hear the belt under the hood squeeling... Thats another little problem - One thin belt going around the drive shaft, waterpump and alternator!

I havent had a chance to test it out on the road yet!

Any info would be great, this forum is a goldmine of information =)

Paul.

If you just bought the car, I'd start with a tune up. New plugs, wires, dist cap and rotor, belts, oil change and filters. If you just bought it, you do not know how long it's been. Try that first before fiddling around with other stuff. Good luck!
