newbie needs help

i have a RX-3 that was given to me a while back , and i've been just itching to get knee deep into it, but the old man that gave it to me told me the owner's son was a drug head , one night he drove off in the car , when he came back later that night it was smoking, it wasn't driven after then. but that was at least 10 years ago!and i haven't had time to stick a batt in it and try my luck at getting it to fire up

now i've been around the piston stuff all my life , but these rotary's are totally new to me, i've read up a bit on therory and basic operation of the wankle , so i'm geting there

now what would be the easyest fix for this poor neglected car? would just a set of apex seals ,springs ,and the engine gasket set take care of the smoking problem? i've looked at the total rebuild kits , but WOW whatta price!
i realise it's hard to diagnose one over the internet ,but what the hell
any one in southen,or centeral missouri or northern arkansas out there?
thanks for helping a lamer rotary fan

number one, make sure you pour a bit of oil into the chambers before starting it. i would suggest atf or something of the like to remove any carbon buildup and to loosen the apexseals as they are probably stuck from sitting that long. search atf trick. there should be a zillion threads on this. after the engine is prepared to be turned over for a first time, fire it up (if it will) and see what color smoke is coming out and how bad. now be warned that it will smoke quite a bit on first start up normally, and if atf'ed it will look like mt helens just erupted in your driveway. once you have it running though, you can diagnose it. blue=oil, black=fuel, white=water. blue or white is means for a rebuild. if you want to drive it till it just doesn't go anymore is your call. however if the engine was overheated, more then likely, it wil have warped the plates and you will be leaking oil and water. remember that a rotory is a big sandwich of metals and doesn't take well at all to being overheated or having rapid temp changes. anyway, thats it for this class, now for any questions...........
