Need help using compression gauge.

My dad has one that you screw into the spark plug hole. The only problem is that you guys say to let some valve out so the needle doesnt hold a reading. I dont see one on the gauge do I need a special one?

Most have a valve core to push to release the pressure on the gauge , I know its name but can not spell it . If you hold the core down and test or remove the core ( unscrew it with a tire valve core removel tool ) then you will be all right .

Here is a stupid question-
Why don't u want the gauge to hold the reading
Thanks and dont be mad
Is it because as u crank the reading changes and you want the highest and not the first? Please straighten me out

It is because you get 1 reading for each side of the rotor. (3 total, ...obviously). So you hold that valve down and crank the engine. It is a little hard to see but the needle will bounce up and down fast.

Remember to also take out one of the fuses (i forget which one).
