methanol injection to pass smog?

hey guys, i searched around but couldn't find anything. love this site! alright, my question is this. i am thinking about picking up a 1st gen with a 13b, and doing allot of mods to it. but, i am worried about passing smog. i know when alcohol burns it is very very clean, and i was wondering if this is enough to pass smog. i would run a fuel injected motor, with an ems. has anyone set up 2 maps for gas and alky? i think i am just being paranoid, but i really dont want to fail smog and have to pull the engine to put in non ported housings back in. thanks!! micah

Just add alcohol to your tank when it is about 1/4 full . Add 1 gallon of alcohol, then get some shop to sniff test for you . If it will pass then go for the real test . then fill up with gas on the way home .

wouldn't that cause the engine to run very lean and possibly damage the engine?

You want it to run lean to pass most of the time . Drive it easy and test then refill with hi test . Do not run hard untill all the mix is used up .Garfinkle had a first gen that did not pass . The alcohol cut the test number in half .

Sorry I do not know the answer to that . They do test for several things, here it Nashville and in Murfreesboro , but I can not answer if alc will fix all .

Methanol = antifreeze

(I think?)

Shyshorty, try running the air-pump DIRECTLY into the exhaust, it'll weaken out the mixture slightly

Antifreeze is primarily glycol with other things added to it.

Methanol rots any and all rubber hoses you have. It also eats any gaskets that get in their way (carbs).

If you must run meth to pass smog....
-do it on a warm day...meth runs cold and unless you change plugs, your car will more than likely not start.
-you will be using about twice the amount of meth that you would use with gas. your car will be running very...very lean and in a dangerous condition.

My suggestion would be to run your car out of gas (obviously have a gas can) so you know exactly what you have in the tank. Put in enough gas to get you to the smog shop plus or minus a gallon. Add the meth and pass the test. Get around the block and get that crap out of your tank (drain it). use the rest of your jerry can to get you to the gas station. Fill up and go.....buy me a beer as you would have passed your test.

DO NOT LOAD YOUR ENGINE UP WHILE USING METH UNLESS YOU HAVE JETTED YOUR CARB/FATTENED THE MIXTURE WITH YOUR PROGAMMABLE EMS.

I add 1 gallon of denatured alcohol (available at stores like Sears or paint stores) to about 5-6 gallons of gas in the tank. I also run a main cat for the test. Doing this drops my numbers a lot, but it will only help so much....

Do not use methanol! It is very hard on the fuel system. If you want to use alcohol, first choise is ethanol, second is isopropyl. These are used in gasline antifreeze. You can buy ethanol at liquor stores too. Or you can buy gas with 10% ethanol already in it. That is about as much as your engine can stand anyway. Mine runs great on that. Perhaps then you could add a bit more just for the test, and then top up the tank with alcohol free gasoline after the test, such that you end up with only 10% alcohol in the tank. We don't do emmisions here, so I can't comment on the effects.

methanol works fine if you get the ratio decent. seems like 6:1 is pretty decent. remember, if you don't use a stabilizer with the methanol it will seperate from gas...percipitating to the bottom fairly quick. the stoich of methanol is around 6.6:1 ...it takes theoretically 2.4x the volume to have equal btu as gas. i suppose you could raise the fuel tables enough to get it to the smog station on straight methanol. again, you will need to rougly double the fuel volume to engine. maybe try propoleneoxide?
