Immobile FC!!!

So I am far from a mechanic, but I've always been good at fixing my cars myself. My rx7 hasn't needed any attention besides an oil change in quite some time, so I feel a little rusty. It had trouble starting last week. Then after a ten minute drive I hear a pop, and steam starts pouring out of the hood. The radiator is decently new, and the hoses are fine. A sensor looking thing right next to fill cap on the radiator popped off. Any ideas what caused this? I can take a picture tomorrow if it will help the diagnosis. Thanks for reading, and forgive my ignorance.

That is correct. It didn't appear to have any leaks in the cooling system before hand though, so I'm kind of confused. It looks like it is broken. Can a new one be purchased and installed easily? Thanks for the reply.
