I GOT T2 PROBLEMS! Help!!
ok i have a 2nd gen turbo, and i am finishing up on my motor swap. i swapped my blown 87 motor for a jap-spec 89 motor. my problem is the damn thing wont start. i think i have a fuel problem. the walbro fuel pump i have wont prime right. it only pumps fuel when the key is turned to "start". i thought the pump was supposed to run when the key was in the "on" position. my hanes manual said there is a plug terminal that i could put a jumper wire on to make the pump work. well i tried that, the pump came on and everything. but the car still wouldnt start. even with the jumper wire in. so i think there is another problem, but im not sure what it is. my only guess is that my mass-air meter might be bad. the way it spins over it sounds like its not even trying crank, which reminds me of when i forgot to plug in my air meter once. but the fuel thing is the main problem. i know there are a lot of smart rotary people on this forum, so id apreciate any help from any one of you. its been 10 months since i drove my T2 and im so close now i can taste the boost. any idea is welcome as this one is beyond me. thanks in advance.

If youre sure the fuel pump is working.....
Hows your timing? Double check that you match the timing marks up on your CAS, even if you didnt remove the Crank Angle Sensor maybe the shop/importer messed with it.
Good luck

1987 has more than likely the the low impedence injectors i.e. 1-2 ohms. The 89 should have high impedence injectors, about 12 ohms. If your car has a solenoid resistor pack under the air flow meter, then you have to have the low impedence injectors. The high impedence injectors will not work. The solenoid resistor pack looks like a silver outfit with one large plug on it. Have to remove the afm and filter to see it. If your car has no solenoid resistor pack, then you should indeed have the 12ohm injectors.

im not sure at the moment if my car is low or high impedance, but ill check as soon as i can. the manifold is off my old 87 motor and th front cover as well, these are parts you have to swap to get the 87 harness to mate to the 89 motor. if that helps any. but the injectos are from the 89.

Yeah. Don't bust your b..ls trying to start it until you determine if the resistor assy is there or not. Its mounted to the frame under the afm area. If you discover that you have one, you can either swap the injectors with the original ones or remove the solenoid assy and splice the wires around it.

thats a good point about the injectors and im going out to check that right now, but i still have questions about the fuel pump. its supposed to run constntly when the key is at "on" right? mine only works when the key is at "start". thats the most confusing problem. i need ideas as to why it would do this, or a solution to fix it if someone has one.

The fuel pump in turned on when you go to start. When the car starts then there is a micro sw on the flapper door in the air flow meter that will *make* and keep the fuel pump engaged. So I say no, the pump should not be on if you go to Start and return it to the center position AND the car did not start. If indeed you have suspisions about whether the fuel pump is engaged, do this. On the right hand strut tower, next to the boost sensor, there is a yellow in color plug that has two wires. One black and one brown. Take a piece of wire, and with the key in the ign position, jumper the two wires together. You should have heard a click of a relay. The fuel pump should be a pumpin. Go back to the rear and listen for it. It should be running. Now you know you have gas. Indeed if you think its a gas problem, get a can of starter fluid. Spray in the intake. CAr should fire up. That should give you confidence that you have spark if nothing else. IF YOU HAVE THE HIGH IMPEDENCE INJECTORS IN A CAR WITH THE SOLENOID RESISTOR PACK, the car ain't a gonna work. If you do not have the solenoid resistor pack they will work and you've got another problem. OH YEAH. The reason for the pump is only working when the afm door is open(key is in the ign place now, not start) , is if you have a wreck the door in the afm will shut and shut off the pump so the car does not burn to the ground.
