I'll be putting on a light weight flywheel for my S5 Turbo II...


I have 1 13b-RE cosmo Counterweight (still on the motor)

I have 1 S4 Counterweight (still on the motor)


and i have 1 Unknown Counter weight NOT on a motor (which i prefer to use)


how can i identify or tell them apart?

I heard you cannot mix and match an S4 with an S5/S6

i don't wanna grenade my motor

 

Correct, the S4 counterweight and S5 counterweight are not the same. I guess the S5 and S6 and JC Cosmo probably are since the rotors are all the same weight.

Why not just use the Cosmo counterweight, unless you need the motor for something else? The Cosmo motors were a weird mix of S5 and S6 but it should be the right counterweight.

Or, take the counterweight off the Cosmo, and weigh it, and see if it weighs the same as the one you've got. To be safe you want to make sure they have the same center of gravity too.

If you put on the wrong counterweight you won't grenade your motor (unless you try to actually use it that way) but you'll sure know it in a hurry.

 

the cosmo will be a side project so i don't want to take it unless i REALLY have to..


basically I have a counterweight that i purchased with an Racing beat flying back in 2005... 2nd hand..

it's already off of the car and ready to be used... half the work is done


if i want to use the Cosmo CW.. i have to remove the Torque converter (which has a stripped bolt that is hell to reach) and then the oh so fun main Flywheel bolt


I finally have a use for it now.. but the CW that came with it.. i don't know how to tell what kind it is ...

hence why i'm asking is there a Part number? or visual difference? or only the 0.2lbs difference in weight?


I didn't literally mean the motor will blow up.. but i'm sure the bearings wont be too happy wobbling around like that

 

Can't answer you that, I have never actually seen an S4 counterweight, except in pictures, and I never saw anything that stood out.

I would think if there were a visual difference you'd be able to see it. I mean you have an S4 you can look at, and an S5 you can look at, and if there were a part number you ought to be able to see it on the loose one you have.

I bet somebody here can tell you exactly how much each of them weighs and you can just weigh yours and then know for sure. If nobody here can then I bet Mazdatrix can but you have to buy something from them at the same time or the next time you try to buy parts the karma gnome will switch your parts for piston rings.

 

from what i searched an read

S4 is 4.2 lbs
S5 is 4 lbs

that's not much diff.. especially if the scale is not that accurate

 

So, use an accurate scale

* Chemistry lab
* Butcher (just make sure he doesn't put his thumb on it )
* Pediatrician (last resort, most of their scales suck)

 

the rear CW on a S5 has 2 holes drilled on one of the sides(bottom side)
the rear CW on s4 has 1 hole drilled on one off the sides(bottom side)thus the diferences in weight
Cosmo same as S6 and S5

Here's one of the counter weights I have...

i don't see holes on either of the flat sides:

only 3 holes on the the slim side...

So what the hell is it?

Actually, you're wrong.
If you stare at them, they look almost exactly alike.
In fact, they weigh almost exactly the same.
I have an S4 and an S5 rear counterweights, and they were with 0.02 lbs. (the resolution of the certified scale I have) of each other.

I've heard of a rumor that Mazda doesn't even sell year-specific rear counterweights anymore - you need to order a single part number and balance them yourself.
I can't deny or confirm this.

IN GENERAL, the S5 countweights will have more holes in them.

thats truth R-TED they get balanced by drilling the holes

 

I'd say it's pretty safe, although I cannot 100% confirm it.
I like the theory that if it has multiple holes, it's gotta be S5+.
My S4 rear CW only has one hole too.

ottoman thats and s5 counterweigth its was drilled 3 times in order to get it balance,
like R-TED said IN GENERAL, the S5 countweights will have more holes in them.

 

and for the front counterweigths its the same thing,i just went and check a couple that i have S4 on hole S5 2 holes
