I found this engine builders site. They're in Canada. They say they can use an apex seal up to 6mm thick. Anybody have first hand experience with these.

why, why would anyone want this....unless you are going to go nuts with like 50psi of boost pressure....

That's what I was thinking. But I wondered if anybody actually tried them.

 

I would think that the 6mm are for old 12A eninges..
4.5 is oversize if you break a 3mm...

3mm = teh hotness...6mm = Insane hotness

 

Everyone who had a '73 and earlier Mazda rotary had 6mm apex seals.

6mm one piece carbon-aluminum. They were much of the reason why rotaries had a reputation for no low-end torque and poor longevity.

Mazda figured out how to make iron work for apex seals and introduced them for '74. They were 3mm for less friction, and two piece for better sealing. Longevity problems *eliminated*.

Later they went one better and made three piece, 2mm seals, for even less friction, even better sealing, and even longer rotor housing life.

Then they put turbos on the things are destroyed all that hard work in proving the engines' longevity.
