hard pull... blue smoke.

hey guys, i have a 87 T2... lets see info to help before i descibe the problem... s5 turbo and mani... both cats cleaned out/"deleted" boosting around 6 to 7psi, 9psi if its nice cold crisp air outside haha
but anyways... this doesnt happen to often but enough to concern me about my baby girl. so when i do hard pulls in 1st and second gear, bring rpms to about 6 to 6500 area, as soon as i shift i get a lovely cloud of blue smoke shot out. sometimes its a brutal amount other times its just a "poof" what could be causing this???? thanks.

Two places.

1. Turbo oil seals are going.

Or!

2. Oil control o-rings showing signs of blow-by.

To test for the engine oil control rings, slowly rev the engine to about 7k and hold it for a while to check for blue smoke. Since your engine is turbo, the turbines aren't going to be spinning as fast since you have no load on them. If there isn't any smoke then it's your turbo oil seals however, since the oil pressure raises as you rev, it's really going to be hard to tell which one it is if your turbo oil control rings are really bad. If they are really bad shape, they will leak all the time.

well i will say i go through oil way more then i should.. but i have no spots under my car. :/

First remove the crankcase vent to the turbo inlet duct, then after its been driving for a while pull off the turbo inlet duct and see if there is any oil in the compressor housing. If none then check the spark plugs for oil. As said its either the turbo or the engine...

i didnt know rotorys still had a "crankcase" hmm... ok.... well ill see what i can figure out then. still knew to my car. learning a little more each day with her. just kinda nervous to "jump" into the engine cause of how tempermental they are. but thanks for the help.

the Hitachi HT18S turbo(standard TII turbo) oil seals usually fail on the turbine side, not the compressor side.. sounds like a turbo oil seal though or too much crankcase pressure, make sure someone didn't cap off the vents on the filler neck and the center iron. a faulty turbo will also likely have some shaft endplay, in and out, some side to side is normal. oil on the plugs means the internal oil seals are failing and the engine needs to be rebuilt, but some thick engine oil stabilizer will help in the meantime.

ya there is a little shaft play side to side but no in and out. and there is no oil on the plugs.
but would i have to "rebuild" my turbo is the seal is out? never really done any turbo work before, new to that as well.
and i was wondering if anyone knew what my oil pressure should be at when its idling and when its at max... mine seems sorta low to me. thanks again.

ok... so weird "thing" so i changed my oil a couple days ago, including filter, it was at around 3000 mile "time" and now, my oil pressure sits a little higher, and i dont get blue smoke on hard pulls. and she is running like a champ. just thought id let the guys who gave me advice know and see what their input on this "situation" is.

Turbo engines are more prone to suffer from fuel saturation of the oil. This thins the oil and makes it more prone to squeeze past seals. Make sure your crankcase is vented correctly, run 20W50 oil and change it more frequently.

if it's necessary, i only suggest 20W-50 when it is really necessary(worn engine/turbo) or if the car is going to be driven hard in hot weather.

i agree with both of you guys thats y i kinda met in the middle with 10w40, car loves me now! haha no more smoke, decent oil pressure. but it never did cross my mind having thinner oil that it would seap through seals. thanks for the tip.
