Get The June issue of Car and Driver

It has a 3 page article on the new rotary thats going to be put in the Rx8s, basically it has lighter rotors and the engin weights 303 not 344 like the 3gen ones. It also has differn't exhaust ports instead of periperal ports, it has the ports on the side of the rotor housing so the unburned fuel is traped and must go through the next combustion cycle. And supposable a cleaner sounding note, maybe unlike our supercharged lawnmower sound we get.

The lawnmower sound suits me just fine. I like having a car that not only looks different than most anything on the road, but also sounds different. Imagine putting a gas turbine engine inside an RX-7...talk about rotary!

You get the lawnmower sound if you have a cheap muffler.........

What get's me is 250-270 NA HP @ 24MPG

I think "green rotor power" would be a good title.

Naa they prolly won't they wil only make it in N/A, though what you should start thinking about is if the 2003-2004 miata is going to be rotary powered, that would be sweet

I think they'll have to turbo the engine, to compete with the other Japanese supercars. If the engine is really green, and I think they're saying it's LEV in NA form, they should be able to turbo it and pass new smog rules.

The mistake, in my mind, that Mazda made with the 3rd gen that sank it was only offering it in turbo, so $35k, with no base model for those who couldn't afford it. Hopefully this time we'll see turbo and n/a models, it'll be a selling success, and we'll all be happy

Nah, I'd say keep the 7 exclusive. You don't want NAs sticking on turbo badges and defile the status of the rex as a ***** out performance car.

just be happy that you'll be able to turbo/supercharge it yourself..

(I'm thinking supercharge, because from what I hear, the renesis is severely lacking the low end torque.)

The existence of the 2nd gen NA proved that a rotary car could be reliable (many of the NA motors go 150k miles, I'm at 164k), have power (albeit moderate, although 150-160hp was pretty decent during the late 1980s) and balance (you have to love 50/50 weight distribution), at a price that was competitive.

And yes, I'm thinking of getting the RX-8 next year when it comes out, and maybe add the supercharger to down the line.

Turbos on the RENESIS as it stands might be a bad thing. Right now the compression ratio is too high (I heard about 11+:1) for turbos. But it brings back the days of my first gen (manufacture date: 8/78) where all there was was the engine, ignition system, cooling system, and some amenities (AC/heat,) wrapped in a nice, light, nimble, strong, and small frame and body. I could deal with that once again. The lack of turbos does reduce the compelexity of the thing. Now if we can make sure there are two good sized oil coolers and a radiator twice the thickness of whatever the brain-boys at Mazda calculated to keep the engine adequately (yeah, right,) cool.

After hearing the Renesis at Sevenstock I can say that the exhaust note sounds damn sweet. Somehow they got rid of the 2-stroke sound and now it sounds almost like a porsche flat-6 down low, with a nice snarl up high. The car sounded VERY refined and VERY smooth. Maybe that was partially psychological after hearing the cars before it (Abel's car, the 787B Le Mans winner, RB Bonneville car, among others), but I really liked the sound.
