Question European ECU to Jspec engine

Hi.
I friend of mine got a brand new (5000 kilometers) jspec engine for his FD, but he got without the jspec ECU so he connected the european ECU. In order for this to be done, there had to be some modifications to the wiring harness clips that connect to the ECU leaving a wire out(black grey wire).(Probably the 180kph limiter). The car did start normally but (this is the hard part) he gets no indication from the oil pressure, water temperature meters, their warning lights don't go off (stay lit), as all the other warning lights of the car do (they don't go off). I believe that the european and the US ECU's are quite similar, so if anyone has done anything like this and has eliminated this problem, his/her(?) input would be quite helpful.
Thanks.
Fanis.

You might want to post this in the 3rd gen forum if you haven't already.

We have a Jspec engine, with Jspec wiring harness which connect to european ECU, to european car.
The car works fine for the last 400km. We measured the boost and it goes up to 0.95bar! We pushed the car to 5000rpm just to check the boost. The car has a gutted out dowpipe and everything else is stock.
The wire that stayed out from the jspec wiring harness to the instrument panel is brown. What is the function of that? Also the engine misses some valves and it doesn't have the fuel temperature sensor.
We should take it within the week to a friend to put an air-fuel mixture instrument so we can see how the car is running with all that boost.
Can we see from the engine number, what kind of engine it is?

Not sure about the brown wire but glad to hear you got it going! A Greece Rx-7

The engine number may tell which one it is but a sure fire way to tell is where the knock sensor is. If it is above the trail plug on the front rotor it is an S5. Of course, if you have the entire engine you can tell by looking at the intercooler as well as the turbo. If the IC has an aluminum, straight, intake pipe it is an S4 because the S5 has a black flared pipe. The S4 turbo also has the twin scroll solenoid.

What is an S5 engine? What was its production years, how much hp did it have???
What else does the S5 engine mean?

S5 = 89-91 200hp
S4 = 86-88 186hp

They changed some designs on the S5 to make it stronger and more efficient.

Oh, well the S4 and S5 still applies but for your engine there were not many differences. In Japan, and maybe in Greece, they kept making the Rx-7 up until 1999 I think so I am sure they changed a few things in the engine but as far as I know I have only heard of S6 for the FD. As far as the numbers on the engine to tell what year it is I have no idea.

Cosmo Donk thanx a lot for your replies, still the engine remains a mystery, though it works fine(except for the big boost patterns- 0.95 bar-14psi).We 'll find out eventually.
If you ever come to Greece for vacations feel free to give me a call... Maybe we 'll have a 7 meeting...
