engine rebuild question

when you look in the service manual it talks about a "soft material coating" and i was wondering if i sent the engine to a maching shop to be cleaned like the rootor housings, rotors, ect. if it would destroy or remove the coating. it is for a 91 n/a. thanks

Why don't you ask the machine shop about it?

you will need to have the housings lapped as well as cleaned. my suggestion would be to send the housings to a reputable builder like mazdatrix, atkins, racingbeat, and they will lap and clean. or just try calling one of the builders and ask. btw, the coating is metal, not a lubricant.

the service manual just says take care not to damage the soft coating so i was wondering if having the machine shop clean the parts would it hurt the soft material.

no, they mean not to throw it around and chip it. like i said before, its a metal coating. but you will need to lap the housings. its like honing a cylander so that the piston rings will seat in properly.

I have heard that lapping removes the coating and greatly increases wear on the side housing. Essintially it is better to have a housing that is in spec than to lap one into spec. can anyone give an opinion on this?
