Engine Hoist

I wanted to buy an engine hoist suitable for replacing engines in RX-7s (FD).

Does this Harbor Frieght one have enough reach or is the boom too short?

http://www.harborfreight.com/1-ton-c...ane-93840.html

Says boom is 36-1/4" to 50-1/4" but I am not clear if that's the total boom length or the USABLE length (due to hitting the front bumper).

Thanks,
Brian

Yea looks to be the same one I have from my local auto parts store (advance auto). Im not sure if it was an isolated defect, but mine failed lifting a 350 out of a friends truck. The welds on the bottom seams of the outer *box* let go, allowing the boom to basically just fall and peeled the bottom piece of metal back. Luckily noone was under it when it let go and the engine slammed back down in the bay. I welded in some 1/4" plate all the way around at the outer edge of the boom sleeve to ensure that couldnt happen again. So, just a heads up.

Make sure you buy a chain . The boom is going to be about 6-8 in's too short. The 2 ton is better length wise. But if your set on it a chain will fix the issue.

I went to the Harbor Freight store (didn't know they actually HAD stores)....

Measured the 1 ton and the 2 ton.

The 1 ton's boom only really has around 35 inches of usable length because you will be pushing the thing up against your front bumper. I really don't see how it would work with the front bumper installed.

The 2 ton had several inches to spare, so I bought that one.

Thanks,
B

Buy a load leveler while you're at it. It's much less fun without one.

depending on how soon you need a load leveler....check jcwhitney from time to time. I never really get anything from them but decided to check them out about a month ago and they had the load leveler at a unbelieveable price. I think I picked it up for ~$10 shipped to the house. They had it on sale for like over 80% off and I bought it when while they had free shipping. I just check recently and it is back at the regular price of $40 or 50 but it might go back on sale, you never know.
If not, you can always order it from Advanceautoparts.com. Advance have it for around the same price ($40 I think), but provide free shipping if your order comes out to over $75 if you don't have an advance auto near you. There are always coupon codes that gives you huge discounts. I just bought something from them using a $30 off of a purchase over $75 (code "big30"). Hell...... pickup a set or two of ngk platinum plugs ($26 for a set of 4 platinum plugs 7's and 9's or set of four 9's, you can't really beat that anywhere, hell there are places selling the regular non platinum plugs for more than that) and your order will be over the $75, you will end up buying the leveler for around $10, either way still a good deal.
