custom exhaust vs. apexi/greddy/racing beat etc
Whats the difference between ordering an exhaust setup from one of the major manufacturers, and getting one custom made?
I'm just curious as to what will happen emissions wise, and what difference it will make to the cars performance. I had my last car done at a custom place, they did an excellent job, but can i use them again?

Custom will be cheaper. But make sure you use a muffler that is known to survive the hot rotary exhaust. A standard turbo muffler will not last long. Avoid ones with fiberglass packing. Ceramic and SS packing, or no packing, should be fine.
A muffler has almost zero effect on your emissions one way or the other. If you remove cats, etc. that is a different story. But a GReddy cat-back will have the same effect on emissions as a custom one, as both with have no effect.
Performance will depend on the details of what your custom exhaust has versus which name brand one you want to compare it to. The name brand folks don't have any secrets that aren't available to you. They aren't really tuned beyond choosing a muffler that will flow enough and piping that is big enough. You can do the same for your custom setup.

I prefer custom over a prefabbed most of the time.
It's cheaper.
You get what you want.
More Freedom.
Is much more interesting.
You can tune.
You can do some creative and original things.
Nothing is ever a "direct" bolt on for pre-fabbed exhaust systems.
I do like the premade systems when it consists of complicated turns and a design most shops hate to deal with. A perfect example is Spintech's side exit for trucks.
That exhaust is well made, mandrel bent, true dual. A very nice system.
In this case the costs of labour to have a shop do it is more than this setup and installing it yourself. With over the frame bends and a normal pipe crusher, you get ugly bottlenecks.
The RX-7s have only a complicated bend at the very end over the IRS. Other than that, it's very simple and custom is usually always cheaper.
1200 for a racing beat true dual exhaust...ridiculous.

My opinion is that it depends on what you want. You need to get a good muffler, especially for a rotary. Most of the high flowing ones sound like crap on our cars so you need to find something that others have used and recommend which usually means pre-built. Plus you do have the more complex bends over the rear axle(s) that the bolt-on systems already account for.
For a high-flow cat it doesnt really matter, just get one and as long as the muffler shop can weld it onto a couple mandrel bent pipes and put a couple flanges on all is well.
For a header or down-pipe it is probably best to get something that is already on the market, they really arent all that expensive and they probably arent the easiest thing for your local muffler shop to make.
In the end though, it probably doesnt really matter. Just dont use anything with fiberglass packing as was already mentioned.

I have the full racing beat exhaust for a TII and I love it, Plus I know it's intended for an RX7 and has been significantly tested.RB is a great company to get parts for your Rx because they have been around since the begining of the Rx. But custom is the next best thing if not better, depends on how far you might go with your car.

custom is not necessarly cheaper... custom mendral bent 3 inch exhaust is 1500 cdn... i got quoted from a shop... most other shops are around that price and they use some shitty as ractive mufflers for 1500 bucks.
PLEASE! give me a break... do i look like a ricer?
i personally feel the racing beat turbo back system at 789 USD is very very competively priced.
and i hear it is now stainless (2nd gen)
too bad i live in Canada and racing beat is in USA
