Moly grease with a socket - bang it HARD
wet toilet paper with a socket - same as above
Dremel - cut the inner race and the needle bearings all fall out, then remove SS outer casing

Just unbolt the clutch cover from flywheel and use a flat head screwdriver to pop the reataining ring out (look for where there is a gap in the ring) then everything will slide out.

Find a bearing removal tool its worth all the agrivation of finding one. www.rx7.com rotatry performance will mail you one and give you the rental back on it when they get it back.

Also dont forget to screw the bolt thats in backwards at the top of the tranny as far as you can to make putting the tranny back in easier. that bolt should be slotted for a screwdriver.

Ted ..... Good luck you have my support.

i'm resurrecting this thread because i'm in the middle of my clutch change and found that the pilot bearing is dead. i don't need to remove the inner race or needle bearings as i guess the input shaft has already done so for me, but ...
what would i use to remove the SS outer case?

I have with an air grinder with a small diameter grinding burr ground through the outer race & pulled the outer race out with a needle nose pilers. Be carefull with the E shaft while grinding.

Have Fun ; )

I never replace the pilot bearing. If it worked fine before, and you're not a gorilla when you reinstall the transmission, it will still be fine. The bearing sees a very low-stress life. Just throw some fresh moly grease in it and don't worry about it.

The only times I've ever seen a pilot bearing bad, were due to poor installation, or damage when trying to install the transmission. You eliminate the first problem by not replacing a perfectly good, known-installed-correctly bearing, and replacing the bearing won't get you around the second problem.

(number of personal comebacks due to faulty pilot bearing: zero)

well ... you pretty much know that i'd never doubt you, peejay, but my pilot bearing disintegrated. as far as i know, it's the factory issue ... i'll be posting photos of the pieces as i found them when i removed the clutch. so i had no choice but to change it. yeah, i never bothered with them, myself. this is my first since starting with rotaries in 1987.

i'm just glad that everything worked out like it did, considering the horror stories i've heard.
