It turns over, starts for maybe 3 seconds, then dies, sometimes goes out with a bang(backfire). I replaced fuel pump b/c we didn't think it was getting fuel pressure and i have plugs and wires on the way from napa. Anyone know what this is? or have ideas

You should be able to hear the fuel pump when ignition is turned to 'ON' position.

You could also put a jumper wire on the fuel pump check connector (yellow connector of passenger side of engine). That will turn on the fuel pump continuously (bypassing the AFM switch, see below).

You could have a problem with your AFM (air flow meter). If non-functioning or not connected correctly, it will turn off the pump as a safety measure.

You should tell us the year for your car.

its an 87 turbo II, thanks i'll check the afm tomorrow
