Car sounds really weak. Losing compression?

Hello everyone. My friend is about to buy an RX-7 and i just wanted to him out. The car is an 89 rx-7 13b na. We know that the car will either need a new motor or rebuild but i just want to see how bad it is.

At start up the car sounds really weak and soft and seems to have no power. I read the guide to buying an FC and it says something about uneven noises, but i dont think i hear any. Does any one know whats wrong? I know i am being extremly vague, sorry.

You can get the gauge at Auto Zone.
