Car overheated, cant find the source

Ok my car has overheated where the cap above the thermostat houseing popped off and it just started steaming from there. I replaced the thermostat it was still good and its not leaking from the waterpump what else can it be because I have no clue? Also what can I check or how can I check to see what else is wrong with it?

fatal,

Have you solved the problem yet?

What mods have you got on your car?
Have you got a pressure cap on your AST (assuming you still have one)?
How dirty is your coolant?
Can you smell fuel in your overflow tank?
Is your coolant overheat alarm sounding?
Are you overheating while moving along or when stopped&reving hard?
Is your water pump belt gripping the pulley?
What coolant mix are you running?

Let me kno if you still haven't solved the problem.

Kace

Where does it come out from, the over flow bottle? Start your engine and let it idle. Look for white smoke out the tail pipe and look in the overflow bottle and look for bubbles. If it bubbles, then that means there is a strong possiblity that combustion pressure is getting past the water seal and into the coolant system. If none of those are happening, and just coolant is filling up the overflow bottle, try changing the thermostat.

If u let it sit and idle and the temp continues to climb to the point of boiling, it's most likely the thermostat, but if it stays fairly cool at idle but temp increases while driving, especially on the interstate, its a flow problem. Have the radiator cleaned and maybe even rodded out. I've worked in radiator repair before for a couple years. Ur local repair shop should be able to flow test it. Should flow no less than bout 15 gpm.

my seven has been doing this, more or less, for a while now. when i am on the gas (does not matter how hard), the temps climb.. but at idle, they drop back down to normal... is the suggestion then that i have a clog somewhere in the coolant system, rather than the thermostat being bad?

Could be clogged radiator, but not enough to totally overheat. Some guys in the 1st Gen forum was talking about a laser pen that tells you the temp of what ever you point the laser at. If you point the pen at the rows in the radiator you could see temp fluxuations.
