You can do anything you want to. The question is, should you. Getting your rotors machined isn't that big of a deal really, and I wouldn't reccommend using a wire wheel because it will cause you to have an uneven braking surface.

Hmmm, are you referring to a brake rotor or an engine rotor?

on an engine rotor to clean carbon and such, yes. on brake rotors to clean surface rust, i use fine grit sandpaper.

yea, its fine. But you should really look at that purple stuff that vdub(?) used, as well as other members, that left the rotor looking brand new.

Use a pine wire wheel with light pressure and you'll be fine. dDub used a Zep Industrial Purple cleaner from The Home Depot that made his rotors look gorgeous.
