Bad Smell?

I've got an '87 Turbo II in my Kelmark kit car. I'm not running cats and the exhaust smells bad enough to gag a magget. Is this a normal smell for cars that don't run cats? I'm running a Haltech E6K and have thought that maybe the smell comes from running to rich(the 550cc injectors are new, and I'm running a Hitman map.) I don't want to lean it out to much as all of the things I've read about that subject states that Turbo IIs don't like to run lean.

That's the way rotarys smell with no cats peroid. Go to the dyno and fine tune your car, you have to dyno tune your car even if the map was made for your car, because all cars are not the same.
