APEXi Active Tail Silencer - Anyone used this?
Hey All!
So I took my FD for its maiden voyage last night and well...it's #$%^&@* loud....!
I had ear ache after less than an hour.So I am wondering if any one has had any experience with the APEXi Active Tail Silencer:
https://www.nengun.com/apexi/active-tail-silencer
My exhaust is a full titanium FEED unit with the mid pipe resonator and rear muffler but is still damn loud.I would love to drop the volume but do not want to hurt the engine with too much backpressure.
Thanks, Tom

They had a line of exhausts that had these built in, the PS revo. They were discontinued because they kept getting jammed and was a permanent silencer. Exhaust gunk/carbon build up I believe.
Same thing for the early line of automatic exhaust cut outs, they couldn't handle the heat, and would burn out the motors.
From my experience, the titanium is probably at fault. It's thinner walled compared to regular exhaust material (SS vs Mild Steel, etc.), and translates the sound/does little to deadening sound. Titanium exhausts always have a different tone/tinge to them because of this.
I purchased one, but never got around to getting it to work due to the odd size, I think i have the 90mm one which doesn't work too well as its 3.54" so you'll need to restrict a 4" or stretch a 3.5" pipe.
I think your best bet is to insulate the interior and just let the other poor SOB's outside deal with the sound.

I used one on my old Apex'i GT setup on my now-deceased VR FD. It worked very well, but they really only fit on the Apex'i exhaust in my experience. It's a press fit into the exhaust tip, then you use an M6 bolt with a provision for a cotter pin.
It was great while cruising but at WOT when it was fully opened it still did cause back pressure of course and threw off the tune. I also experienced an odd condition at part throttle where it would stay partially open and make a woooooooo noise
Really it was most valuable when approaching my neighborhood late at night: I would jump out and get it out of it's box and bag from the rear hatch, jam it in there, then slowly drive the last block home and quietly ease into the driveway and garage. I'd remove it the next morning after everything cooled off
It comes in two sizes:
Active Tail Silencer - Silencers - Exhaust

Thanks for your advice and insight!

I found out years ago that the tailpipe can be severely restricted in size and not affect power output/backpressure at the engine because the exhaust cools and therefore contracts by the time it gets to the tailpipe.
I had a full 2.5" exhaust on a 210hp N/A, and putting a 1.75" restrictor at the tip reduced exhaust noise and especially highway drone to a remarkable degree, and engine power was completely unaffected.

I found the same as peejay on my old TII.
I had JIC Spec 90 turbo back exhaust which was 90mm from turbo to a single rear muffler (no presilencers)- so it was LOUD.
If I put the exhaust tip silencer in which restricted the outlet to ~ 1 1/4" with a stinger the exhaust was MUCH quieter and turbo spool was just as good.
Peak power wasn't much effected, maybe 5-15hp by the old butt dyno (once I solved the boost creep issue with silencer out that is). This is at 380rwhp.
So like 365rwhp through a 1 1/4" exhaust tip... It sounded like pshOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO at full song when the external wastegate wasn't open. Hmmmn, so maybe most the exhaust was going through the 60mm external wastegate in my case...
As far as the tune. I tuned with out the tip silencer as the engine ran about a point/half point richer AFRs with the silencer in at high rpms. So, it did negatively effect engine VE in the high rpms.
Another problem I had is spirited driving with the silencer in basically forced the ceramic muffler packing right out the muffler. It was like turning the muffler into a torture chamber as far as heat and pressure.
Later I rebuilt my Spec 90 with a bigger, much heavier Vibrant stainless packed oval muffler canister and the exhaust had the same tone, but was quiter both tip silencer in and tip silencer out.
Plus with the tip silencer in the ss packing will take a lot more abuse than ceramic wool.
The powdercoat burnt off the muffler and it shot out glowing slag of balled up stainless steel once in a while, but most of the packing remains.

Silencer Adapter, (for 100mm. Muffler tips)
I was going to have my fabricator do the same with a pipe and cut out a section to tighten the radius.
I don't know what that white portion is
