Rx7 not running, come to a dead end

I recently purchased a 1987 rx7 and it ran good for a day, then just stopped running in the middle of the street and found it was the starter so I replaced it, started up perfectly. But the next day just stopped again. Spark plugs all spark, injectors are clear, fuel pump is pumping out of one of the two nozzles coming out of the top of it. When I turn the key all the pulleys turn but it only sounds like your trying to start a dead car but doesn't attempt to really start like the engine it's self if getting ready to start. So I replaced battery and alternator just thinking it was something with that and still nothing. It WAS over heating the previous day but coolant was full fan was blowing, I replaced the water pump (not thinking it'd help my car start just dying to fix the over heating).
ANY IDEAS OR CONSTRUCTIVE FEEDBACK WOULD BE MUCH APPRECIATED!!!
thanks for reading

-Evan

Well the first red flag is that a starter is not going to inhibit the vehicle from running, only from starting (unless somehow it's so seized up that the motor can't spin freely).

Have you done a compression test? This could save a lot of wasted time.

Is the car bone stock, or is it a typical 30 year old rotary where several previous owners have ripped things off and "modified" every piece under the hood?

We need more information.
