Any one ever have this happen to them?
OK just a little help here guys. Last night on my way home from work my car starts acting funny. Any time i put it in to gear the rpms drop almost like I am trying to do it while bringing up the clutch. then all of a sudden I cant even put it in to gear at all! Any time I try it stalls out the car! I can only move the stick around when the car is off. I have checked and there is plenty of fluid in the clutch resovaur*(spelling). So I am out of ideas, Has anyone ever had this happen to them? If so any Ideas would be great.

never had it happen, but my guess would be that the clutch is engaged...check the line pressure? how many miles on the clutch assembly? tried putting it in gear and starting it with pedal depressed? does it want to move? sorry I couldn't be more help...

I think Blue Goose is on the right track. If you depress the clutch pedal and attempt to start the car with the transmission in 1st or Reverse, you may find that the car will want to move (make sure no one is in front of you our behind, if in gear). This is due to the clutch pressure plate exerting pressure on the clutch disk, even though your left foot should be forcing them apart.
If this is the case, sounds like either your clutch is worn out, or the slave cylinder is leaking, or the mastercylinder is leaking - these last 2 are pretty easy to fix, the clutch replacement is a bit more work (!).
First, have you been having to add brake fluid to the clutch master cylinder reservoir? If so, do you see any obvious leaks below the clutch master cylinder? Is the metal tube that goes to the slave cylinder wet, or is the paint rubbing off? If you see leaks here, this may be due to a leaking master cylinder, or a leak in the line connector at the end of the master cylinder. Be sure this is tight.
Also, get up under the steering wheel and look at the clutch pedal mechanism. If you see obvious fluid leaking past the piston where the pushrod for the pedal goes through the firewall, this is due to a leaking piston seal. You can have a leaking seal here and not notice it since the carpet tends to soak up the leaking brake fluid. BAP has the rebuild kit for about $15, I think, for the clutch master cylinder, or the whole thing for $55, which is another good option if you don't want to tinker with the replacement piston and stuff.
If the above 2 things seem okay, look along the drivers side of the manual transmission bell housing - you'll see a slave cylinder attached to the bell housing with a rubber boot that extends toward the back. Put your hand down here and see if there is brake fluid leaking down the side of the transmission bell housing - if so, the slave cylinder is leaking. Also, squeeze the rubber boot and see if brake fluid leaks out - sometimes the boot fills up with fluid and you don't see it leaking down the side fo the tranny. BAP has the slave cylinder rebuild kit for about $13, last time I did this.
If everything above checks out okay and you don't see any fluid leaks there, when was the last time you changed your clutch disk? If it's been 60-70k mi, you may be due. This is a pretty big job, as you'll have to remove the driveshaft and drop the tranny to get to the clutch pressure plate.
Get back to us here and let us know what you find, and I can go into more detail about what specifically you'll need to do to fix any of the 3 things noted above. Take it easy,

I did not check the slave, but I did look at the master and did not see any fluid. the resivuar is full. So I dont think there is any leaking. I dont think it is the clutch becuse if that were so then I wouldent have problems puting it into gear while the car is on. My assesment is that the clutch is engaged and when I depress the pedal it does nothing.

Probably the slave cylinder then, but you'll also want to check inside the passenger compartment for leaks by the clutch pedal action rod to ensure that the master cylinder isn't leaking past the piston seals into the footwell carpeting. Let us know, slaves and master cylinder rebuilds are pretty easy. Certainly easier than a clutch problem.
Hey, while you're at it, an easy way to see if your clutch pressure plate or disk is going is to drive the car at 40-50 mph in 3rd gear and step on the gas to the floor. If the engine RPM's spin up, your clutch disk is worn and will need to be replaced. If the car accelerates normally and the engine RPM glides up with vehicle speed, you're probably alright there. HTH,
