If your car has a thermal reactor: ('80 and earlier) Yes you need it, else the TR could overheat and collapse internally. The air pump provides cooling air around the unit in addition to injecting air into the exhaust.

If you car has a catalytic converter: Yes you need it, else the converter can melt down. I know someone who threw a cat on his car (an '87 or '88) without the air pump, and it *did* pass emissions, but the converter lasted about five miles before it plugged up. Good thing he headed straight for the test center when he left the exhaust shop!

If your car has a stock type clutch fan: It's a good idea, since most of the water pump drive comes from the air pump belt. The alternator belt only glances off of the water pump pulley, and on the non-tension side at that.

If you have an '89-91 non turbo model: It's a good idea, since the air pump supplies the air pressure to open the aux ports.

If it's from an RX-4 it wouldn't have had a cat.

I hope you have a header installed. The thermal reactor does not enjoy not having an air pump.

The air pump is only used for smog purposes, and will not hurt your car if it is disabled or removed. Some claim a lumpy or hunting idle when it's disconnected, but may others have no problem. I have been told that removal of the air pump will result in the early demise of your catalytic converter. I highly doubt that though, as above 3000RPM the air pump is not being used.

that is from http://www.scuderiaciriani.com/rx7/air_pump.html
