Question 91 RX7 - engine bogs down at 2k rpm, Help!

I'm the new owner of a 1991 RX-7 convertible, 5 speed, ~122k miles. It starts up just fine, and will rev to the limit standing still. However, when you begin to drive it, or put it under any sort of load, the check engine light comes on, it boggs down, falls on its face and loses power at around 2000 to 2500 RPM. The dealer, over the phone, says it's probably the "metering oil pump" with a parts cost of $1700. I'm just wondering if anyone else has experienced this problem, and what the solution might have been. Thanks for the help.

Exactly my problem right now also. Do a code check and see what the codes are. See other threads for the procedure. If it shows codes 20 26 and 27 it is a MOP problem and do a premix while you determine the cause. It can be wiring, MOP or ECU. You will have to start looking around. Also check the teamfc3s.com forum for my posts there also.
