88 Rx7 won't turn over

Hello, my 88 sometimes would not attempt to turn over on the first turn of the key. Sometimes it would take a couple tries then it would and now I turn the key and knothing happens. It will start and run fine when it is bump started but the starter does not attempt to spin. Any ideas since I don't know about rotary engines would it need a new starter or something else would cause this?
Thanks

Clean and tighten the connections between the battery and the starter. If that doesn't fix it, check the charge on your battery. Sometimes they get old and refuse to produce like they did when they were younger.

just because it's a rotary engine makes the cause of ur starter problem no different than if it were a 4, 6, or 8 cyl. start with the bat connections and bat condition. then check the signal wire on the solenoid with the key in the start position. if all checks out, replace the starter. the problem lies in either the solenoid or the starter motor itself.

If not the starter, battery, battery cables or starter signal wire, read this thread: https://www.rx7club.com/2nd-generation-specific-1986-1992-17/ive-solves-2nd-gen-sticky-starter-mystery-896013/. Sometimes it's just the ancient wiring with too much resistance built up. An added relay to pull power directly from the fuse box/battery will bypass old wiring and allow the starter to operate properly once again.
