Informative thread for a n00b like me. I always wondered about the positves vs. negatves of 3mm seals. Now I know.

One thing I can say is that the motor in my FD lasted 140K+ miles before I had it rebuilt...and it was still running fine. 2mm seals dealing with 10lbs of boost for 14 years with no problem, and I'm sure I'm one of many.

I was wondering if you were driving RX's around pre RX7? My first rotor (mid 80's) was a twin dizzy RX4 coupe with an unmolested factory motor - they certainly did not lot last 300K miles, but they were not as unreliable as has been described above. How many third gen RX7's last to 300k miles My current car still uses 6mm seals.

its hard to compare a motor making 3 times the power in terms on longevity's sake.

I would be interested to see what the seal design would be like if mazda had the budget to bring ceramic seals to production, with any possible size and design, assuming longevity, reliability and optimum sealing where equally weighted design goals.

Just like a fat 3mm carbon - some are two piece with a steel corner piece.
