1981 with 12A won't start it's flooded
I also have a 1981 RX7 that won't start. The last time it started was 11 months ago. I know it was stupid of me to let it sit unstarted for so long and I ended up flooding it. I've owned the car for 35 years so I know the usual procedures to make it start when it's flooded - drying off the plugs/replacing the plugs, adding type F, jumping it off another car, etc. None of that is working this time even though it's hot and dry out, which the car likes when started. I also own a couple old piston engine cars (from 1960's) which always start right up if I spray some carburetor cleaner down the front 2 barrels. Is it ok to try to start a FLOODED first generation RX7 with carb cleaner or starter fluid? Nothing else is working.
What is the problem with fuel delivery. If the pump is delivering an adequate amount at the correct pressure and the floats are properly set, there should be no need for starting fluid. I had a very similar situation with my '79. When I finally had the proper fuel/air mixture and AN ADEQUATE SPARK, it started and continues to start every time. I'd recommend 2 cycle engine oil over the transmission fluid as well as turning it several rev's by hand before attempting to crank. A fully charged battery is a must and a bit of good luck always helps.
The concentrated solvents in starting fluids wash down the surfaces and break the seal between the rotors and the housings offsetting the benefit of the oil used to de-flood and effectively lowering compression.
