Goofy fan question...

Having never seen another RX-7 up close and personal while running other than my own, I've got an oddball question that I'd look up in my manual if it wasn't 39 miles away and this being convienient.

1st gens normally came with cooling fans, didn't they? Are they supposed to kick out a small tornado? When I open the hood with the car running, I can barely hear the engine over the fan and there's enough wind when I'm standing over it to whip my hair back. Just wondering because I've seen a few posts mention an electric fan conversion...

Thanks!

Yep, my '83 GSL sounded like a aircraft starting up it's engine, until I replaced the clutch fan with a electric one.

ya, I found it funny when it cleared out my yard and all. Almost makes it seem like its propeller powered.

Yeah, I've gotten that airplane comment a few times

At least it must be pretty good at cooling down the engine. Every time somebody suggests listening for vacuum leaks I'm like "....riiiiiiiight." I always open up the hood and pretend, but I swear I can never hear anything other than the fan

Thanks guys

LOL someone suggested that to me too. I just looked at them and say, "You have no idea what my car sounds like." With the eletric fan, the noise level is reduced alot and it still cools the engine.

don't do the electric fan mod!!!!!!! secretly, mazda created the rx7 with a rotary powered turbo shaft propeller engine. it was based of the idea of the batmobile's turbine, but on the scale of an affordable sports car. in removing this fan you will gain horsepower but lose the pull of the prop in conjunction with the wheels!

Didn't they make some WWII fighter planes with rotaries? It's all coming together now...

Mine does the tornado thing when I first start it up then after about 10-15 seconds it slows down and runs normally. Your clutch fan could be hosed.

Very easy to install. You could just go down to a local advanced auto parts or auto zone and pick up on there.

Make sure you place the fan on the back of the radiator (closest to the engine) not in front. Make sure the fan is a "puller", to pull air through the rad. if it isn't just switch the wire around and it becomes a puller.

When I start my 85 up, the fan spins normally for the first few seconds and then goes into 'tornado mode' and goes WOOAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA and then goes back to normal turning speed. I'm guessing that your clutch is bad.

Are you refering to my fan clutch (if their is such a thing) or my transmission clutch?

My '85 base model's cluctch went out completely, so I had to wire the fan directly to the hub. Keeps the thing running rediculously loud. EVERYONE looks when the car comes down the road.

My -SE on the other hand is loud at first, but as the revs increase the fan speed drops.
