Question Dual exhaust

Ok, well upon looking around for new front ends and body kits in general, i came across the ab flug kit and noticed the twin exhaust in the middle, has anybody done this? custom or otherwise? Interested into how it was done. Also, i was wondering if anybody has even done a normal dual exhaust conversion on an fd. (FC's have them but they seem to have suffecient opening on the driver side rear) Post pics if u got it on an FD and maybe even a how-to or atleast a link. thanks

Why would i wanna do this? cuz i love the way a dual exhaust sounds with 2 slightly different mixed tones. even the slightest difference in a weld or flange will create a different tone. It also looks great. And besides all this, its one thing i would like to do because its very visually pleasing and creative.

I too think duals would be cool. I know it adds weight, but it would make the back end of the FD look like a Ferrari (quads). I've not seen one yet but I see someone makes one for the Miata. Anyone tried to weld up one themselves?

Why would you want to make the back end of an FD "look like a Ferrari"? It's a Mazda.

I wish anyone trying a dual on an FD with the stock gas tank the best of luck exiting drives.

No, it would look like an FD with duals. I think the car looks unbalanced without duals - kinda like having a fresh air intake on one side and not the other. Just my opinion.

Here's my FD with a quick try at duals with Photoshop:

These are Racing Beat dual tips, BTW. I wonder if they would sell me just the tips. Then I could go to a muffler shop and have them bend up some pipes. Not sure there is room for them and the necessary Y pipe, though.

Awhile back I decided to try and install dual exhausts on my car, but I quickly reconsidered after I added up all the pieces that were necessary, not to mention that it would not be street legal due to the mods to the fuel tank. The cost was over $1.5K and the time necessary was too much. The fuel tank needs to be entirely replaced, because the stock one does not allow "any" modification to it, and there is no room around it. Then you would need 2 new catbacks, which add up to $1K alone. Then you need a muffler shop to do all the custom work(hangers, y-pipe, extensions, flanges, etc.). Last but not least, you would greatly reduce the capacity of the tank. The new tank would be about 10 gallons which is half the original. I too really like the look of the dual exhausts, but it's very expensive and difficult to do on an FD.

I'm tyring to picture that FD with 2 singles instead of the quads and by golly it's kinda hard. I think that the dual tips look nice on there, but it just seems to add more ooooooommmph! to the bottom diffuser aread and less oomph near the top where it appears to be more sleek and refined. I think that a GT wing will fix that right up! Otherwise that looks really beautiful rotary-tt and would definetially earn you soem points at your next car show.

That one with duals actually looked pretty hot. I didn't think it would. Anyway any of you guys stop to think this would cause your exhaust to be even less free flowing because of the inteference with the split at the y pipe. I know a few guys with fcs who actually changed to a single exhaust for that reason alone. Not to mention the added weight. If looks is all your after and don't care that much about performance go for it. I agree it looks nice.

Hell, if looks are all you're interested in, just hang a second exhaust tip there like a Honda driver would

There was a picture a long time ago of a silver FD with some custom hatch (made the rear window smaller, kinda like the newer Vette) and I think it had dual exhaust. I could be wrong though. Anyone remember those pics? Have a link to them?

I knew it wouldn't be long before someone posted such a response since they couldn't think up something more imaginative to reply with. BTW most high end sports cars come with dual exhaust. Looking like a Ferrari is not bad, we already get constant remarks that the car looks like a Viper. How many of us try to hide that it is a Mazda by buying Efini badges???

I think wanting to install dual exhausts has "nothing" to do with trying to disguise a Mazda and make it look like something else. It's just a matter of taste. If you like it then go for it if not then don't bother.

I thought about it, also, but like Mach2 said, it will be a BIG mission. There are a BUNCH of things I'd like to spend my $ on instead of a dual system.

IMO, a dual tip setup like ours WOULD look good, but serioualy wouldn't be worth it. Most cars that have a dual setup is because they have 2 banks on the engine where the exhaust comes flying out of. Our exhaust is all on one side of the motor. With the limited space that we have to deal with, a TRUE dual exhaust just wouldn't fit. I'm talking about a pipe coming from each rotor into it's own turbo, then out again from the turbo into each own muffler. We would have to run dual pipes going from the front to the back of the car for a TRUE dual setup.

As it is, adding a Y would be just like the Dual N1s. If one of those N1s were to be able to swing over to the other side of the rear, it would be a dual CB setup. If it was so power robbing, I doubt Apex would have ever released the Dual N1s, but as Mach2 mentioned, it would need some work around the fuel tank.

I'm willing to bet that Red FD (I forgot the name if that company) has a fuel cell. Thus giving them the space to install those 2 mufflers there.

Looks like the RX8 is going to have duals http://images.rotarynews.com/images/...ascii24-06.jpg
although probably not 'true' duals. I think many performace cars don't have actual 'true' duals - look at a Camaro\Firebird. My brother's Firehawlk dumps into 1 cat then into a Y pipe. Just for looks. I happened to have had an FC and liked the duals. It is a matter of taste and looks like Mazda is moving back in this direction. Hell, I'd attach the dual tips even if they did not connect just for the hell of it. No different than adding other non-functional body accessories. How about a dual without a cat-back and a block-off plate? You could run a partially open exhaust when you wanted, then block off for quiet motoring.

Hey, where did you get the Ferrari emblems? What's the part numbers? Probably not worth it since they cost as much as an FD motor???

Hey, I did not notice that the one with the Ferrari logo has 2 single tips. Who hacked my Photoshop job? I was kidding about the Ferrari logos

My brother's TA had 2 rectangular outlets - let's see if I can find a pick to copy these to my FD. BTW the TA does have T tops. I think he does indeed have quad rounds now (a Hooker setup or something). Are we saying quads are out of style I must be getting old

I should put up a picture of my old FC with the dual Racing Beat single tips...

If someone made duals for around $1k I don't think it would be a bad deal (considering what some headlight and body kits cost).
