disconnecting motor from transmission.

Whats the tricky part of this? I was told that only porsche and fd's are like this. How do you get the through out bearing to release??

Are you trying to remove the engine or the transmission?
The simplest way is to remove the inspection plate on the bottom of the transmission. Unbolt the six pressure plate bolts, get in the car, step on the clutch and the engine will detach with the fly wheel. Loosen and remove the transmission bell housing bolts and the engine and transmission will seperate.

Hi 93redFD. As you probably know, the FD uses a pull type throw out bearing/pressure plate instead of a push type. It really is simple to do once you learn it. No offense to Trexthe3rd, but I think it's a heck of a lot easier than having to spin the engine to loosen the six small bolts holding the pres plate on. All you really have to do is stick a long pry bar or screwdriver up through "service hole B"and pull the collar out (toward the back of the car) and it will realease. Takes 5 seconds.

The step by step procedure can be found in the big green 1993 workshop manual on page J-12. In case you don't have the book, here is a link to it. Just scroll down to J-12. http://www.scuderiaciriani.com/rx7/s...ansmission.pdf

Have fun and Merry Xmas
Tom

i think undoing the 6 PP bolts is easiest. never had any luck with the collar through the service hole.

sorry to bring up the old post, but the motor blew at 4k miles. A extenal coolent seal went out. Does anybody have any pics of what im supposed to pry??? THis is the only thing I have left. I really need pics. I have never pulled a engine nor a trany. I have all the bolt of the trany to the motor also. I though that i was supposed to disconnect the trany bolts 1st. If I unscrew the pp bolts, How do I stop the main drive pulley from rotating?? I would tried the pull and release but I dont know what a collar is. Sorry for the ignorance, I have never delt with this kinda thing.

I wedge a screw driver between the bell housing and the fly wheel and unbolted all the nuts on the PP

you can use a prybar or large straight blade screwdriver to hold the pressure plate (hold the flywheel teeth using the prybar against the trans housing so it can't rotate) or have a friend hold the front pully bolt with the proper socket and breakerbar

I worked on a Toyota supra, 87 turbo, that was the same way. Any pull-type clutch will be like this.

This is the best way:

Remove both inspection plates on the bellhousing.
Remove the clutch slave and let it dangle by the line.
Stick your hand in the top inspection hole and pull back on the release fork.
While holding it like that, look in the lower hole with a light and you should see that the collar is pressed into the pressure plate now.
Stick a long flathead screwdriver in there between the bearing and the collar... while releasing the pulling force on the release fork with your other hand. The collar will stay in the pressure plate, and the release bearing will come out of it.

If you do this right, it should be disconnected.
