How to tell if you have LSD

Okay, i DID search. And came up with a guy saying if you can break a wheel lose after jacking up the car and you still have to put up alot of effort it's LSD, and so on....But if it turns without a problem its an open differential. Or an extremely worn out LSD, damn it just cancelled out everythin he had said. What are some good ways to find out if you have LSD? thanks

That is the best way.

Really, what's the difference if you have an open diff, or an extremely worn out LSD? Didn't cancel out anything. Either you have a good LSD or you have an open diff (a dead LSD qualifies as an open diff0

jack the car up, if you spin a wheel and the other side spins the same direction youve got an LSD. if they spin opposite of each other youve got an open. also i think theres some kind of tag on an LSD differential an 7s.

Not necessarily. That can happen if you have an open diff, and you have zero bind anywhere in the driveshaft/transmission or the opposite side brake.

if they spin opposite of each other youve got an open
Again, not necessarily. If you left the transmission in gear (duh) or otherwise the driveshaft can't turn, ALL differentials will cause the other wheel to turn the other direction. Or, again, if there's little resistance and the wheels can turn in opposite directions, all that means is it doesn't have a good LSD. It might have an open diff, or it might have a burned-out LSD. (But, as I mentioned before, it doesn't matter at that point because either way, you have an open diff, and if you want an LSD you are going to have to hit up the junkyards)

also i think theres some kind of tag on an LSD differential an 7s
Which, after 10-15 years, can be missing, or an LSD tag might have been accidentally placed on an open diff rear by an inattentive technician who forgot to put it back on the car it came off of. ("Hmm, I have a tag on my workbench, I don't remember taking it off but I'll just throw it on there...") Or, for that matter, somebody might have swapped an LSD in an open case, or vice-versa.

How about rev it up to 6 grand and dump the clutch. If you leave one long black mark you have an open and if you leave 2 black marks you have LSD.

An open diff will do a 2 wheel peel if both tires have equal traction.

How often is that though? Just the slightest difference in tire wear, a piece of gravel or any other imperfection in the road will give you a one wheeled burn out on an open rear end.
I have yet to leave 2 black marks side by side in my REPU and I burn out alot!

put out a strip of water and get one wheel over the water and if you go anywhere or the car slides sideways you probably have a limited slip. i've seen people with open diffs leave 2 strips behind them

of course revving and dumping tell you if you have either a LSD or the opposite which could be a non-LSD or a Malfunctioning LSD. Doesn't say if the LSD is bad. you have to check out the VIN and see if the model was supposed to. (that info is on the site too) and then see if it does and leaves one mark, replace it. If not, and it it leaves one mark, upgrade it. That's only if you want LSD of course, many people opt to "stay off drugs"

An open wheel diff that is close to blowing will "LSD" this is caused by the pin and/or the spider gears locking the diff centre up....this creates and LSD sensation......don't be fooled by this!!!

If its an NA dont even bother. You may either have a worn out lsd or open diff. I think theres a very very small chance youll have a working lsd. I have 3 lsds and all 3 suck ***. Im was going to rebuild one but plates are like $40 and there are eight, well 4 dics and 4 plates.
I think the best way is to crank the wheel to lock and rev, dump the clutch. The car should kick its butt out and spin very easliy like my TII, if you are driving in circles or you have to kick the clutch to do it its open. This best way to find out if your lsd is really working. Oh my worn out lsd will only do it in the rain.

Yup. The best way to tell if you have an LSD (or what used to be an LSD, LOL) is to see if it has a yellow tag on the fill plug with "LSD" printed on it. Yeah, I know, it's kinda complicated.
