what kind of oil filter do you use?
Like the thread says, what kind of oil filter do you use? I need to change my oil. Where should I go to purchase a filter.

Believe it or not I just sent a lengthy letter on this subject to the 1st-gen mailing list. 
I use any ol' filter, but I do use the ones made for '89-92 Mazda 626/MX-6/Probe 2.2l fours. These are the largest ones that fit properly, which helps minimize bypassing with cold oil.
The way rotaries dirty the oil, a filter will not "clean up", no matter how many microns it filters down to. Filters do not remove water or gasoline dilution, they remove particles. If you're dumping many particles into the oil in your RX-7, it's because you have a boinger in there instead of a rotary. Worry more about the quality of OIL you put in your engine, and change it regularly.

I use CM Performance Filters. They're the type that you only have to change the inner cartridge once a year or when the oil pressure drops below 60 at high rpm's... I use the no bi-pass type... Works great..

Ohh yeah, ive been using fram. Just last nite I bought their new X2. Well see how it goes.

I've heard that you should only use the MAZDA ones (at least on the -SE) because they have some sort of a check valve that holds in oil so you aren't dry on startup.. The filter in/out is on the bottom, so other brands drain as it sits.
Has anyone else heard this?

Fram filters are total ****! go to NAPA, theu usually have a cut away of their oil filters vs. frams. the frams have very little filtering mat'l and use cardboard ends. yes, cardboard! WIX makes the best filters out there handsdown. WIX also makes NAPA's oil filters. Puralator also makes a very good filter. that is what i use because it's 1/2 the price of the WIX.

WIX oil filter number 51356. I have heard nothing but great things about WIX filters. I buy a bunch at a time since I use the same filter for both my FB, and my FD.
Purolator PureONE filters are also good. K&N are good. OEM is good. Fram sucks, and so do all the cheep brands. You get what you pay for.

yo9u can get the pure one at Advance Auto. In fact, they are on sale in my area, just under $5.00...I bought about 4 of them. I heard Wix are very good too..and hey...rx7gslse!!!...I heard about that check valve thing too but do not know much on the topic...but I think the pure one oil filter has that check valve you speak of that helps on dry starts....Maybe someone is more knowledgable...cjf................................ .........................

Wix filters have both of these for sure.
PureONE and OEM have at least the Anti drain back valve, but I'm not sure about the filter by-pass valve.

I've always used the Mazda filter but now the dealer around here is supplying smaller filters for the last year or so and says the new size is now the recommended one. It's about 2.5" x 2.5". Cute little bugger, but I'll be putting a different, larger, type next time. Another case of bigger is better.

Well, from what I just read, I really need to go buy another filter!!! I'm currently using a Fram
filter that was in the car when I bought it. It also appears to have some sort of oil cooler fin assembly type thing under it, and I was wondering if this was normal (stock) or if this was something someone has added. The -SE doesnt have anything even remotely like this, and Ive never seen another 12A with one (and ive looked). Anyway, its about 6" tall and has a whole crap load of fins that are spaced about 1 CM apart. I think its also made by Fram, as it is black and sort-of orange (its worn in color so I cant really tell). Anyway, when I change the filter, any of you know if it would be cool to continue using this Fram-looking thing?

That's the oil cooler, all '83-85 12As left the factory with that. It would be in your best interests to convert to the '79-82 12A style oil cooler, although apparently (I'm still waiting for confirmation) '84-85 12A cars have the bracketry in front of the radiator to mount a GSL-SE oil cooler.
