Whats the deal with the pulsation dampers??? What exactly do they do and how many of you guys had one go bad? When it goes bad should it be replaced with a oem, aftermarket, or can it be removed completely???

there was a long thread about that, search, i am sure you'll find.

 

there is no aftermarket one that would bolt to the fuel rail that i know of.

Mazda sells the PD for ~$130. I think that's the only way to go.

I think bacon got rid of his. Do a search and he tells you what parts you need from summit.

 

I pulled out my old recipet just to be sure. I paid $97.09 for a PFD from Mazdaformance. www.mazdaformance.com

It lists for $129, but they can sell Mazda parts with a %25 discount, or something like that. They're awesome to deal with.

 

The pulsation dampner compensates for any irregular pulsations in the fuel flow to ensure the fuel injectors constantly have flow. Well..................that's my theory anyways

You know, people always take them out when they upgrade their fuel system. I'm sure it is an absolute when dealing with the stock fuel pump, but when we upgrade to a higher flowing pump, I really don't see the need for it. Again, that is just my theory

 

Flybye has the right theory. If you have the stock stuff replace it. It goes bad from this rubber piece for **** that hangs out the top. That usually gets brittle, cracks, and leaks. Not good to drive unfixed, thats asking for an engine fire.

 

But you guys think with a upgraded fuel system that I can ditch it? i dont know I might replace it just to make sure. My local dealer will sell it to me for $108 so I'll prob do that. I know its a little more than online prices but not much and I dont have to waite for it.

Does anyone know FOR SURE that its ok to ditch???

When I had my fuel system replaced they ditched mine and everything works perfect.

 

What exactly is needed before you can ditch the FPD? High flow pump, FPR?

 

Who did it??? Depending on who did it means alot to me.

Look at it this way.

The fuel pulsation dampers seem to be failing because on the 3rd GEN they are now approximately 10 years old. Apparently that is going to be their normal life span.

Just replace the FPD and don't worry about it for another 10 years.

 

Ralph at Xcessive Motorsports by Portland, OR. He put in a huge fuel pump, fpr, and new injectors. They also fabbed up the fuel lines for the fpr, don't know the details on that though, sorry.

 

An SX fuel pressure regulator will act as a fuel pulsation dampener.
