Who needs a laptop for datalogging?

My company's had a couple of older laptops on the shelf for a while now.. they're nothing much.. NEC Pentium 150's & 233's.. at least 800x600 active screens and at least a gig or 2 for drives.. not much of a laptop by today's standard, but datalogging doesn't really really take much..

They've all got a 9 pin serial port, I'm pretty sure they all have floppies/cdroms. What they're not 100% on (yet) are batteries and power bricks. If I can find enough power bricks, you can get batteries, or just plug it into a $25 voltage inverter.

Anyone interested in something like that? Maybe for $100 a piece or something. We'll have to see how many I could get my hands on. Let me know.

Dave

Dave, let the record show that my name is up first, so I get dibs on one of them!!

Seriously, if they're about $100 apiece, I could use one to help with the Wolf 4.0 I just bought.

Thanks

Okay then, I'll make an effort to check into it more seriously then.. I'm going to be out of town the 23rd through the 31st (hawaii...), but I'll do some digging tomorrow to see what I can see..

As for soundcards, yep.. most laptops have them built in.. as for shipping to NZ, wow, how much of a pain will that be? I tried to ship a hard drive to a guy in South Africa last year (eBay sale) and it was just too much trouble.

I'll let you know what I find.

Update...

Well, it turns out that there was a good reason these things were sitting on the shelf.. before I left I managed to snag parts to get one together.. Before I send it out, though, I'd like to keep it for a bit to see if I can use it to get others running.. so there's at least one coming (NOTA944). It's a 233 if I remember..

Nope.. Back in Maryland.. I've been trying to squeeze in some work on this in between all of the random crap I have going on. My problem has been coming up with power supplies for these things. I'll probably have to end up selling these things to you minus the AC adapter.. but I've seen them on eBay for like $25 or less. It's model ADP74 for NEC 6000 versa series laptops.

So far I've got 2 p2 233 NEC 6230's - 1024x active screens, at least 2 GB drives, and a floppy. I'm short on CDroms too, so I'm hesitant to give out what I've got until I've got enough to build the next ones.. I've also got a P150 nec 6050, 24MB ram, 800x active screen that I'm looking for a hard drive for... should be soon, though.

These 2 models are mostly what I'll be able to get my hands on.. they sport the NEC versa-bay floppies/cdroms/drives, so while you can only have one in at a time, the drives are widely available.. I hope to be able to nab at least another 2 or 3 p233's and a few more 150s as well.

I'm thinking that a fair price on these would be $125 for either model WITH a power supply, and $100 without. I can not guarantee a CDROM either, but I will try, and if I have some left over when I'm done, I'll just send them out.

I guess we'll just start at the top and if you want what i have at the time, cool, or if you want to wait to see if something better comes along, cool too.

I have a 233 w/ ps and a 233 w/o ps. Nota944 and spyfish, you guys get dibs. I'll PM ya too.

Allright, I have another one done. It's a P150, 24MB RAM, 750MB HD, active screen, 800x600. It's a NEC6050MMX, with CD & floppy, and yes, you will need to get it a power supply.. (NEC ADP74). I found my copy of 98lite (which allows you to put a completely stripped down version of windows on), so this one's got a lite version of WinME (you can beef it back up.. all of the files are there)

Here's the list so far:

NOTA944 - Delivered
Spyfish007 - Delivered
HWO
SilverR1
87GTR
rotorhead333
cymrex
Tim Benton
SPEED_NYC
CrispyRXY

There will probably be at least one or two more 233's, so if someone wants to pass on the 150 in hopes of another 233, that'll be your option. Next up, HWO. Want to take what's behind door number 1?

HWO's passed on the P150.. he's going to wait for the 233 that I'm getting together this week. (hard to justify paying shipping on a p150 to NZ) SilverR1, you want the P150?

Update

Just to give an update, SilverR1 got the last 233.. at least for quite a while.

I have one p150 ready to go, minus ac adapter, with floppy, cdrom and 24MB ram and 750MB dirve. The more I thought about it, I don't think I could ask more than $75 for these. I suspect that this would still be enough to log data, though. I can probably find a larger drives for these also.. like 3 gig'ers.

Next up, 87GTR. You wanna 150?

Oh.. I'll be in Florida all next week, so I'll be pretty much out of touch.

Dave
