Some food for thought...
I'm not any kind of pro tuner, so maybe this thread will make me look like a moron, but I have been pondering this for awhile. How come no one has come up with a fuel management system that works in sync with a wideband and automatically senses the AFR during driving to in turn, automatically tune itself? It seems rather elementary! It would save a hell of a lot of hassle and money at the dyno. Timing on the other hand would still have to be adjusted manually, but the AFR is all taken care of. Just some food for thought, if someone doesn't tell me i'm an idiot right off the bat LoL.

1. There is currently too much lag time for a closed-loop system to keep up with a fast-revving engine. That is why closed-loop is only good for idle and cruise, and why TPS-based acceleration enrichment is needed. Electronics will most likely continue to advance to the point that an EMS will come very close to operating as you suggest.
2. AFR is not necessarily the best way to tune.
3. Most current OEM EMS's keep a long-term log that you could consider an auto-tune function, although they do not operate in real time due to the issues stated above. Also, Autronic has an "auto tune" function that makes a base map based on AFR feedback. It still requires tweaking, but it saves a lot of time. I am sure that other aftermarket EMS brands are working on adding a similar function to their products.

Both motec and efi have closed loop during full throttle. I have even heard of some cars running in grand am with **** maps and closed loop function turned on because that is how much better it is has gotten.
Of course you still need to setup the car properly beforehand and get timing dialed in.
One current problem people are seeing with closed loop is it being sluggish. That isn't necessarily the fault of the ecu, but can be caused from incorrect injector dead time settings.
