Question Question about knock sensor

I don't know much about knock sensors, but I'd like to learn/read more about them. I'd like to tinker around with some electronic retard control systems, but I need to know the characteristics of the signal that comes from a knock sensor.

What does it do when it senses pinging?
How does it differentiate between normal combustion sound, and that of a ping?

Any light would be of help thanks

Ok, so I'm not getting any comments useful or otherwise.... So I'll be more specific.

The knock sensor has one wire. This means that its attachment to the engine is what grounds it out. OK, knowing this I can see this device as either being a switch or a variable resistor.

I can test some on my own, but before I go hooking up 12V to the knock sensor, can someone with a multi-meter tell me what the voltage is at the connector with the ignition in the on position, engine off, and again voltage at the connector, but with the engine running?

Thanks in advance
