noob aftermarket ecu ?

I have a stock ECU. I know nothing about this stuff. The aftermarket ones all come with their own tuning software. My question is - are these aftermarket computers made to be OBD II compliant or are they all custom applications made for specific cars?
Or can they NOT be ODB II if they are installed on pre 1996 cars?
Clueless.

go with the greddy emanage ultimate.... true it is a piggy back but it has the features of a standalone also it works for older cars, and if you buy a diffrent newer car all you have to do is wire it up and change the parameters for your new car thats what i like about this ecu if i want to sell my car i can keep my ecu with no problems, also this unit can be found cheap!! i paid $600 for ecu, software, usb cable and harness i dont care what no one says i put it in my car ran great and i like it!! (still havent tuned it tho??)
