how do ecu's work

newbie question: okay, i know if you mod intake exhaust than you need to upgrade your ecu to get more fuel. my question is do you just buy a new ecu and replace it or do you send the tuner your ecu and they send you back it reprogrammed? on the m2 website it seems like the reprogram it for you, but i always see people selling their m2 ecu. i know for the power fc you program it but what about the rest. thanks.

First of all, you probably don't need an upgraded ECU if you simply modify your intake and exhaust, depending on what your boost level is. Yes, an upgraded ECU would help, but it may not be required.

Your question would have been easy to answer last year, but recently we have seen many different types of engine management products crossing the lines between factory-programmend and user-programmed interfacing. For example, the HKS F-Con S is now offered in pre-set and programmable versions, as is the new AEM engine management system which should be available later this year. The Apexi Power FC and Pettit Unlimited employ a hybrid interface which lets the user choose from a set of pre-programmed settings for different FD modifications like intake, exhaust, downpipe, etc. Confused yet? Most of the other products on the market are either factory-programmed only, such as the AutoThority upgraded ECU, or user-programmed only, such as the Haltech E6K engine management system.

The M2 Re-mapped ECU is actually a service, rather than a product. You send them your ECU, they re-program it for a conservative performance increase based on generic FD upgrade parameters, and then send the ECU back to you. As far as I know, all of their reprogramming uses the same paramaters, regardless of your particular application, so therefore you could buy a used one and get the same thing. IMO, there are a lot of things for sale in the RX-7 store which are a much better bang for your buck than the M2 ECU, although M2 does have some other good products.

Generally, the more an ECU can be customized to your particular car, the more complicated and expensive it will be. Most things in life tend to be this way.
