EMS - Help needed

I got a EMS QM4/QI4 (www.fuel-injection.com).

If anyone on this board has experience programming one of these ECUs, please help.

Under the Auxiliary adjust screen, there are settings for engine warm-up cycle.

There are five Choke Water Temperature settings used during egine warm up. The settings are expressed as percentages (%) of extra fuel, at:
1. -20°C
2. 0°C
3. 20°C
4. 40°C
5. 60°C

The EMS computer interpolates between these settings to give a smooth warm up cycle. Through warm up testing you can adjust these settings to suit your engine more closely.

I want to know what values to place in those temperature ranges, percentage wise, for additional fuel needed during warm up cycle.

On a side note: Out of curiousity, how far advance do you have your igition timing on the 0 rpm map?

And.. where is your C/CRANK set at percentage-wise?

This is for a friend ... by the way.

If anyone can help, please do. This car doesn't run.. and need some assitance to get it running!

Details about the car:

Completely stock 6port n/a (was once turbo but he blew
the motor....so stuck in n/a..)
Aside from having just a highflow exhaust system and a
open element air filter.. the motor and car is stock -
all emissions are removed - .

Car history:
There was once a turbo motor that blew, now that
6-port resides in it.

It's a common misconception that there are magic numbers that you simply plug into an EMS and it then works perfectly on any engine. What you (or your friend) need to understand is that most tuning is based on trends rather than hard numbers. For example, you usually don't just plug in a particular number, you start with the base map and then gradually increase or decrease the value until it yields the desired results. I hope this makes sense, because usually the internet and advertising hype cloud this issue. Anyway, given that...

Contact the dealer for help, and make them earn those big bucks that were spent on the EMS.

Well, we had called Australia, and the offices are closed until Jan 19.

But... we have found out the problem... it's a BIG electrical ghost!

We got the car started 2 days ago, it was idling at 1500 rpm, but the tac was reading between 5k-7k rpm as the shift light was going off. As soon as we let off the throttle, the car would die.

Now.. .the car is becoming into a long-term project, and I believe he's going to re-wire the car...

but thanks for the reply, sir !

Unfortunately, this is typical of Australian "support".

The EMS should be independent of the rest of the car's electrical system, except for the quality of the + power leads and the grounding. If the car was running fine before the EMS installation, then it wasn't installed correctly. It is very common for non-electricians to have trouble with their EMS installation.

That is probably going to happen until you get the idle set properly.

yes we tend to have holidays over the christmas break

did you buy it 2nd hand? if new, it should come with a basemap which should be fine to get it started. you should also use ignition module which comes with the EMS, not the standard mazda 1s.

it sounds as though your spark timming maybe out. whether it be from incorrect wiring from the CAS, coils...

keep us posted. i used to run an EMS as well

Well I bought it new about 3 years ago. The thing is to many people have tried to help me programing this unit so the base maps are trashed. at this point i'm about to scrap the ems and buy a microtech. the car was run in the past with the EMS. I have swaped motors from a T2 to a 6 port NA. and need a good base map that i can work with.

ignition module? hm. I didnt get any.

Well thanks,
Scott

You should have saved the original base map. Anyway, the dealer should be able to send you another base map. My recommendation is that you let a professional tuner set up everything next time. Buying another EMS is just going to put you in the same place you are now, but you will be another $1,000 in the hole.

I think he is saying that you should have the EMS run the ignition system rather than using the stock ignition system.

ahh haa something like that

last i heard you cannot run the standard ignition modules with the EMS. you will need the ignition module that should have been supplied with the EMS. a little black box roughly 15x40x20mm.

so you've swaped the T2 motor and put a NA in and hooked up the eng wires appropriately?
