Question EFI pms connection trouble

Does anyone have any experence hooking up a purple efi box to a laptop? My problem is the efi unit has a serial conection and my laptop only has usb. I bought a serial to usb adapter but, it will not finish connecting. Keeps giving me a damn communication er. 0400. Tech supports has been less than helpful or very compatent about the problem. Just well you need a different laptop...ok sure let me go buy another one since I need two laptops!!! Any help would be nice. Thanks in advance.

You could get a PC-card serial board, but it would be around $100, it would probably be smarter to just buy a $100 notebook computer.
