ECU for big port, NA?

Throwing this out because it seems like every single person going to a standalone is running godawful amounts of boost... or is a full-out megabuck race car.

What I'm doing is building a pport 13B for a 1st gen. Price is a big concern because I'm a poor college student. Will one of the less expensive ECUs (LT4, F9/F10) be able to make it run well, or would I be better off going with a Weber IDA and saving up for a big dollar ECU? I could also go Megasquirt, but I keep waffling over whether I want to have the headache of an ECU that I'm not sure will work right the first time... too many experimental things at once, y'know?

Overall, looking at things, I think that the cost of the IDA plus all the bits to get it tuned right *might* be about the same as some of the prices I've seen for an LT4 and injectors that... well, I know where to get injetors.

In theory, no, not race only. I've done a lot of studying over the last while and am pretty well aware of the tradeoffs of a peripheral port motor. I'm about 80% sure that I can live with all of drawbacks with the kind of driving I do on a daily basis... which is to say that I do not do anything like city driving more than once in a blue moon, which is what seems to kill people's perceptions of driveability. Oh yeah, and I live in a part of the country where emissions testing is non-existent, and I damn well am not using my '7 as a winter car after the trouble I took to find a rust-free shell.

In practice... maybe. I'd be lying if I said there was no chance I'm creating a motor I'll hate for "street" use. I have something in mind if I can't stand it so it's not like it's going to go to waste either way... heh, though a pport motor going to waste is kind of a funny concept.

This is a longish reply because I want to convey that I have put thought into this and considered drawbacks... because I know how "I'm planning on putting a peripheral port in my street car" can sound like newbies parroting race car specifications.

Uh, I dunno what your definition of streetable is, but I've never heard of a PP motor being streetable by anybody's definition.

If anything, the car will be stupid loud, and I bet this will get someone's attention.

Trying to suppress the noise will be choking the engine too much.

Well, I've heard of a few people tolerating them from around here... can't name names off the top of my head though.

Muffling is a problem, one I've been thinking about. I've got a couple ideas to try which *SHOULD* get the noise down to levels that are somewhat close to legal under low-load conditions and still flow well. That's probably going to require some experimentation, though.

Also, found some interesting data on some of Mazda's later race motors that I'm going to use as the basis for the port timing... among other things, it's signifigantly less overlap than the normal "MFR" ports, so that should (among other things) improve backpressure tolerance a little bit.

PP13Bnos ran a prep port on the street if I'm not mistaken. He would be the one to ask. I imagine it would be somewhat hard to live with then your definition of streetable is different then every other member on the board.

Yes you can run a fuel only computer with a PP but like every hybrid engine it will need some serious tuning. www.tweakit.net sells nice looking IDA throttle bodies and intakes.

Good luck with it.
