Budget programmable ECU

I'm a real techie kind of guy :P
I'm really into computers,
and I was kind of wondering how any of you would use a laptop on your cars?

Also, if I wanted a programmable ECU, on a really tight budget, can it be done?

I even have a tablet/touchscreen that would be perfect for in car use. I could even just mount some nice comp speakers in there since I don't have a stereo/car speakers.. that would be cool.

Also, if my car doesn't have a cigarette lighter, does anyone know how to hook 12v DC from the car into a laptop safely, and where the nearest, best hook to the power would be?

I never thought Haltechs were so expensive, though I'm not sure why I just never looked. A lot more than what I paid for my car so far, and even more after I put in a new clutch. Are they really worth it?

Thanks,
Night,
Roarke

P.S. I just remembered I wanted to ask if anyone knew a way to get the door lock/open switch (whatever you call it, that connects to the ring on the inside and locks the door shut) out of a door without taking out a window track and all kinds of stuff.
Thanks again,
Roarke

Got a PM from satch, didn't know about the engine management section :P
I'm not used to forums.. for some reason they seem inefficient for this. I think a cross between a website and a forum would be better, but thats not for me to decide. Anyway, does anyone think a Haltech is that much better than a Megasquirt kit?

Also, any tips for the door?

Thanks,
Roarke

I wouldnt pay retail for a haltech.

As for the door handle, undo one bolt window up, one bolt window down.

I reccomend buying a new cigarette lighter.

Low cost? A RTEK2.0 by Digital Tuning. You can adjust timing, fuel, data log, adjust fuel during Start , install different size injectors and it compensates for them etc.

SAFC are cheaper and don't do timing and does only limiter fuel adjustment and no data logging.

A RTEK2.0 can adjust fuel and timing (to Your inputs). It can data log, It can adjust for differnt sized injectors. Adjust fuel amount during Start, and other good stuff.

And if you buy a Zeitronix wideband, the Digital Tuning has a program the intefaces the Palm used with the RTEK2.0 , with the Zeitronix wide band. Something to think about.

SAFC are very limited. If you have no dough, you might buy one til.......

EDIT: Sort of a double post. The first didn't show up in a timely manner, hence the second post.

Megasquirt. A friend of mine who tunes my cars has used multiple setups, and says that megasquirt is the best. From what I have seen, it is extremely easy to tune.

A MegaSquirt kit is nowhere near a Haltech E11. However, if you don't have much of a budget then you have no choice in the matter. Besides, if you really like computers a lot then you would probably like the MegaSquirt anyway.

Who do I go to when the MS has problems?
Who do I bitch at when the MS dies?
How many aux outputs and inputs does the MS have?
Can I connect an MS to an AIM dash display?
Can I connect an MS to telemetry?

Oh ****, no wonder I have a Haltech in my FC...

the MS section of the forum?

Muythaiboxer and the archives have been very educational and the number of people who know how to use them are out there.

you can bitch yourself out if the MS unit dies. After all YOU build it.

MS is exactly what it's described as, DIY. If you cant work on electronics, then it's not for you.

If you want a commercially backed product, get a haltech.

If something goes wrong with the MS, youll have to get people on the internet try and help you fix it yourself.

This is the main cost difference.
